We’re only seven matches into the Premier League season and Premier League managers are already going insane. Jose Mourinho’s struggles in this area have been well documented here, but he’s not the only one.

After losing 4–1 to Spurs and conceding first place to Man United, Man City manager Manuel Pellegrini got so worked up that he couldn’t even properly execute a press conference storm-out.

The City boss stormed off after less than 30 seconds having quickly grown unhappy with questions about his post-match emotions — before making an embarrassing retreat having walked the wrong way.

“If you want to talk about football, we talk about football, if not then no,” he said.

“If you want to talk about football yes, but if you want to talk about stupid things then I do not answer stupid things.”

Pellegrini would again storm off — this time through the right exit — after an innocuous question about Sergio Aguero’s performance, although the City boss did answer a few questions before that.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers let the full extent of his delusion show after Liverpool’s 3–2 win against Aston Villa.

“I am the same guy who nearly won us the league, but better,” he said.

OK, that’s a bad start.

“I think I have shown in the early stages of my management — without being arrogant — that with a talented group of players I can compete at the top end of the league. I know how to manage top players. If you give me the tools, I’ll do the work.”

Wow. That’s just a mind boggling statement. Is he saying that he doesn’t have a talented group of players now, even after Liverpool have let him spend hundreds of millions of pounds? That’s madness.

“There are very short memories in football,” Rodgers said. “The team was eighth when I got here. We built a team to excite people throughout European football, that should have won the league.”

But they didn’t. And now they’re eighth again.

“There has been a frenzy, there is no doubt about that, to get me out of here,” he added. “Whether that’s a Liverpool hysteria or big-club hysteria, I am not so sure.”

A frenzy! He makes it sound like the criticism for a team with three wins and a goal difference of -2 through seven matches is a flesh craving zombie riot.

But as these guys rapidly drift towards the sweet embrace of lunacy, at least one man is feeling pretty great right now.

“I am proud, of course,” the United manager said.

“I said to the security guy: ‘You are now a security guy of a club that top of the league’ and that makes a huge difference. Also for him. He is proud and I am proud.

“Last week it was the first time I was second. He was smiling.”

Spoken like a man who knows exactly where the press room exit is.
