European football falls victim to Pokemon Go epidemic

July 15, 2016

If you see professional footballers running around the pitch while staring at their phones during matches this season, it’s because they’re playing Pokemon Go — a mobile game that has pretty much usurped pornography as the most popular thing on the internet in just a matter of days since its release.

Borussia Dortmund defender Marcel Schmelzer shared a picture of his teammates playing the game on the bus. Meanwhile, Antoine Griezmann is using the game to help him get over the fact that he lost the Champions League final and the Euro 2016 final in the span of seven weeks.

And Man City are promoting the fact that their stadium is a gym in the game, which is a place where the red, blue, and yellow teams battle for Pokemon supremacy (surely Man United fans are delighted they have the chance to turn the Etihad red, even if it’s just in a virtual game world).

There’s a good chance Pokemon Go will be the world’s most popular sport by the time you finish reading this sentence.
