Manuel Neuer brings back VanPersieing with flying clearance

Manuel Neuer pulled off a timely tribute to Robin Van Persie’s famous World Cup goal during Bayern Munich’s 1–0 win at Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The German with an avant-garde approach to goalkeeping employed his interpretation of the move that launched one of the summer’s most popular memes on a risky clearance that, like every other risky move Neuer attempts, actually worked rather well.

Though Neuer has done this before, it was timely since it came just two days before he was named alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as this year’s Ballon d’Or finalists and Van Persie’s goal reached the same point in the FIFA Puskas Award category (with Stephanie Roche and James Rodriguez).

Perhaps mindful of this final award voting push, Neuer has been pulling out even more tricks than usual. Here he is with a Cruyff Turn in a 4–0 win over Hoffenheim last week…

And a pass so slick that even Frankfurt manager Thomas Schaaf couldn’t hide how impressed he was (as his team was in the process of losing 4–0)…

Basically, real life is just one big experimental offline game of FIFA 15 for Manuel Neuer.
